Bob Mackowsky joined the University of Maryland Students for a Democratic Society in 1967.

As a student, Vivian Simpson challenged gender discrimination and sexual harassement at the University of Maryland in the 1920’s. She was eventually thrown out of school after a lengthy court battle.

Beth Williams was active in the Viet Nam Moratorium Committee and was known for her good nature and undefeatable happiness.She went on to become one of the world’s top wildlife biologists.

Sammie Abbott helped design the classic Radical Guide to the University of Maryland and freely shared his professional knowledge of graphic design to UM activists.

Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was denied entrance to the University of Maryland in 1930. He later helped Donald Murray’s legal challenge to UM’s Jim Crow admissions policies in 1935.
