Mike Green

Mike Green was the Student Government Association secretary in the early 1970’s.

Mike.jpgHe was a hard worker and a strong supporter of social justice and campus activism. Mike was known for his sense of humor and was a colorful character who stood out in a whole cast of colorful characters.

Mike died of cancer in 1973. His Quaker funeral was attended by many UM people who spoke eloquently of his kindness and generosity of spirit.

  • During the Spring demonstrations of 1972, Mike came up with the idea of inviting John Lennon and Yoko Ono to come to the campus and set up a sort of liberated peace zone. We laughed at him, but probably shouldn’t have. In retrospect, it now seems like a pretty cool idea.

    Mike was in love with life in all of its complexity and was a courageous guy who displayed his personal eccentricities for all to see. I admired him for that.

    I still have the Mao hat Mike brought back from China and refused to let me pay for. That was Mike. I miss him.— Bob Simpson
