Bob Wade was a member of the University of Maryland Students for a Democratic Society.

In 1966 he stood next to the Navy recruitment table holding an anti-war sign. He stood his ground against a crowd of rightwing students in a confrontation that led to the first mass campus debate on the Viet Nam War. He also wrote articles for the SDS Spark, the organization's campus newsletter.Bob died several years ago. We believe he suffered a heart attack.

Standing Tall Against War
By: Anonymous

In 1966 SDS member Bob Wade stood in the lobby of the Student Union holding up a sign next to the Navy recruiters that read,"Join the Navy and Sear the World." This was at a time of intense bombing by Navy planes against Viet Nam.

The campus was still largely pro-war, so he attracted a lot of hostile attention which culminated in a near-riot. Bill Hoff, who was in charge of the Student Union, managed to move the debate up to the ballroom where SDS members like Jim Ritter and Bill Gerson trounced the pro-war speakers with relentless logic and an amazing command of the facts. It was a turning point for the campus.
